... was of course the title of the single in question. It was a tribute to Diana, Princess of Wales, and the global proceeds went to the Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Fund.

Whether it was the best–selling single of all time, however, depends on how you look at it. It is authenticated by Guinness as "the biggest–selling single since UK and US singles charts began in the 1950s", but with 33 million sales it failed to pass the 50 million ratched up by White Christmas – which Guinness still names as "the best–selling single of all time" (somewhat perversely, you might think, as the large majority of its sales were based on sheet music and this use of the word "single" probably hadn't even been invented at the time).
